A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
