The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Attack as Authorities Continue Search for Killer.

Two students who died in Saturday’s violent attack on the university campus were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant persisted following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was vice-president of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, the group said. The White House press secretary also expressed sympathies on social media, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her family and friends, especially her parents.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

Nine more persons were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Community Anxiety

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our public”.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering facility on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.

Police that raided the lodging seized two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the person of interest was arrested, the news agency reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.

A private school, a independent school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Additional Memorials

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, companions, and fellow students and grieve for of his potential.”

National Context

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about 7,300 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
